The Means AND the Ends

The Means AND The Ends is the recognition that "getting there" is at least as important as where you're going. These posts are a curated collection of articles I've written as well as interesting finds that can be serious, humorous, and sometimes skeptical about investing and saving for retirement while being mindful that we must enjoy the ride all along the way.

To Escape Covid-19, Grandma’s Living in the Backyard – Articles – Advisor Perspectives

Lifestyle, Retirement

The pandemic has forced many families to make a difficult choice: Should elderly parents stay in retirement communities or nursing homes, or should they be brought to live at home?

Suddenly having mom or dad move in after 50 years living separately may not seem like an ideal situation for everyone’s privacy and sanity. But, by some estimates, more than 40% of deaths from Covid-19 have been of people in nursing homes or residential-living facilities for the elderly.

New York Landlords Press Goldman, BlackRock to Speed Up Return-to-Work and Save City – Articles – Advisor Perspectives

Industry, Travel

The skyscrapers are mostly empty, the tourists are home and talk of New York’s decay is back. For the city’s real-estate barons, it’s time to put an end to it.

A loose coalition of New York’s top property owners and managers is busily working the phones, pressing many of the city’s biggest employers — including powerhouses like Goldman Sachs, Blackstone, and BlackRock — to speed up the return of workers. Their argument: It’s safe, and the eateries and shops that make Manhattan special can’t hold out much longer. Some are calling it the patriotic thing to do.

Lifestyle, Retirement

It was early August when Dorothy Pollack — who is 103 years old — decided there was an item she needed to check off her bucket list. She wanted to get a frog tattoo.

Pollack, of Holton, Mich., was taking a car ride with her grandson’s girlfriend, Teresa Jones, earlier this month when she suddenly blurted out:“Teresa, I really think that I need a tattoo,” Jones recalled her saying. “How about if we go do it?”

“What do you say to something like that? I was shocked,” said Jones, 56, who

As restaurants and bars across the US try to reconcile with a new contactless reality, Italy has already found a nifty solution. The boot-shaped country has revived a storied tradition to get its revelers vino and aperitivo with next-to-no contact. Motels are having a moment. It’s a coronavirus thing | Living | timesnews.net

Lifestyle, Travel

After many years of being looked down on, motels are getting new respect in the era of social distancing.

Guests at open-corridor inns may come and go without passing through crowded lobbies, packed elevators, or enclosed hallways where viruses may linger.“In outdoor corridors, people feel safe,” said Mike Riverside of the Asian American Hotel Owners Association. “People can go directly to their rooms” and potentially reduce exposure to the coronavirus.

Outdoor-facing, low-rise motels and hotels also stand to benefit from being typically reached by car, unlike big resorts and urban hotels that rely on air travel to deliver most guests.

Concours Season Kicks Off With Virtual Concours d’Lemons 2020

Lifestyle, Travel

Had this been a normal year, we would all be donning our mustache wax, blue blazers and straw boater hats and driving the Duesenberg up to Monterey for the big annual car celebration. But this isn’t a normal year, nothing is normal; had this year been a brain it would be the one in the Abby-Normal jar.

Which is just fine with the people at the Concours d’Lemons. They held their annual celebration of wheeled poor taste online this year instead of among the goose poop and lawn clippings of Seaside, California.
